Sights of Great Britain

There are a lot of places of interest in Great Britain.There are both modern and ancient monuments, like Stonehenge and Hadrian Wall, Durham castle and York Cathedral.

Britain also has many interesting museums. For example one can visit the Steam Boat Museum in Embleside. The oldest ship in this museum — her name is “Dolly” — is 150 years old. In York the tourists are usually attracted by the National Railway Museum. It contains the history of Stephenson’s invention of steam locomotive.

But the main attraction, no doubt, is London places of interest. Among them there are: Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, St Paul’s Cathedral, London Bridge, the Tower of London. On the Houses of Parliament one can see the famous Tower Clock Big Ben, the symbol of London. Big Ben is the real bell which strikes every quarter of an hour. Another place which you can admire is Buckingham Palace. It’s the residence of the Queen. London is also famous for its beautiful parks. Hyde Park is the most democratic park in the world, as anyone can say anything he likes there. Regent’s Park is the home of London Zoo.

Visiting this country, don't forget about its natural attractions such as the Highlands, Loch Ness, where some people think a large monster lives and the Lake District, the place, associated with the history of English literature.

II. Повторите правила чтения слов в открытом и закрытом слогах.

   Правила чтения.

        В английском языке гласные буквы могут читаться в словах по-разному в зависимости от положения в слове, а также от того, какие буквы им предшествуют или следуют за ними.

       В том случае, если гласная буква находится в открытом слоге, она читается, как в алфавите.

       Слог считается открытым, если:

1. гласная буква является конечной;
2. за гласной буквой идет другая  гласная (непроизносимая);
3. за гласной буквой идет одна согласная буква с произносимой или непроизносимой гласной;
4. за гласной буквой идут согласная буква + l с непроизносимой гласной.

В открытом слоге:

1) а читается как [ei](эй) – plate;

2) e читается как  [i:](и долгая) – tree;

3) i(y)  читается как [ai] (ай) – nine;

4) o  читается как   [ou](эу) - rose;

5) u читается как  [ju:](ю) - student    

       В том случае, если гласная буква находится в закрытом слоге, слог считается закрытым, если:

1. после гласной буквы идет одна или две конечные согласные;
2. после гласной буквы идут две или три согласные буквы с последующей гласной.

 В закрытом слоге:

1) i  читается как [i](и)- six;

2) e читается как [e](э) -pen;

3) a читается как [æ](э) –bag;

4) o читается как [ɔ](о) -dog;

5) u читается как [ʌ](а) -bus

1.  Прочитайте слова. Обратите внимание на чтение в словах буквы а; заметьте, что конечная буква е в этих словах не читается.
